"Scorpion" is the common name for arachnids that
have a flat, narrow body, two lobster-like claws, eight legs, and a segmented abdominal
tail. They are usually brown in color and range in size from one to eight inches.
Scorpions belong to the order Scorpionida in the class Arachnida. They are usually found in
warm, dry tropical regions. There are about 1,400 different species. About forty occur in
the United States, mostly in the southwest.
The
scorpion is nocturnal and feeds mainly on spiders and insects. It's tail usually curved
upward and forward over the back and has a venomous stinger. In most species the sting is
painful, but not fatal. The only deadly species found in the United States is the
Centruroicles sculpturatus. It's sting has proved fatal to young children and small
animals. Other areas of the world have more dangerous species; the poison is a neurotoxin
that attacks the nervous system. |
